TA Shenanigans

Aug. 22, 2002

I finally got my TA assignment, but not without much trouble. Here's the recap.

After the first day of TA training, I realized that everyone else already had their assignments. Thus, I decided it might be a good idea to check in with the department and see if they sent my assignment to the wrong email address or some other such mixup. Apparently, they simply forgot to send it. No problem, the secretary will just look it up for me. She looks it up and it turns out I'm assigned to a class which I am registered for.

"w00t! I'll just give myself an 'A'!"

Of course, this didn't exactly work with the department. I met with the head of the graduate program I he searched through his records to find another assignment for me. First, he suggested that I help with CIS 479, an Ph.D. seminar on Operating Systems.

"That sounds a little intimidating; are you sure I'm qualified for that? All I've had is an introductory course in operating systems."

"Oh, I'm sure you'll be fine. Just to make sure, go check with the professor in charge of the course."

I head upstairs to meet with the professor.

"Well, I was hoping for someone with an interest in OS, but I suppose you will do fine. How much experience do you have with multi-threaded programming on the Linux kernel?"

"Um...I know where to get the source code for it."

"I see..."

Back downstairs to Dr. Harandi. He promises to find me an assignment and get back to me tomorrow morning.

This afternoon, I finally receive an email informing me that I will be the TA for C S 348, Introduction to AI. After all that trouble, I'm happy with the assignment. I'll probably have to brush up on my LISP skills.
