So far...

Sept. 5, 2002

The conversion to my grad school lifestyle has been a little hectic. The Internet access in my apartment complex is a wreck. Yesterday the DHCP server stopped responding, so we ceased receiving IP addresses. This is after only two weeks of it actually working. If I had any other choice, I would take it.

Right now, I sitting in my TA office serving my requisite office hours. Since we haven't even assigned a homework yet, the expected value of the number of students stopping by is 0. At least I have a working Internet connection to keep me company.

Classes are going well. I've been up late the past few nights with homework assignments due. I should have had them done earlier, but I spent all weekend in South Bend with Kim, and didn't manage to get up the gumption to finish them early. I'm hoping I can get ahead a bit this weekend, but we'll see how that goes. Here's the breakdown for each class so far:

CS373, Algorithms: An interesting class, but with difficult homework assignments. Since I waited so long to start the first one, I didn't do as well as I should have, but it is better than nothing. I'll be sure to improve before the next one.

CS322, Programming Language Design: We haven't actually done much in here yet. We learned some Scheme, since that is the programming language of choice for the class, but we haven't actually had an assignment.

CS497, Advanced Topics in Network Protocols: Very different from the type of course I'm used to. Most of the course grade will depend on a project of our choosing, mucking around with some low-level networking protocols and simulating them. So far, we've just read journal articles and other papers and have written summaries of each one. I've got two more to read tonight.

CS391, CS491: A couple of 1/4 unit seminars that haven't actually met yet.
