Northern Caifornia

Oct. 2, 2001

I did a very informal analysis of various web journals and the amount of traffic they receive in the form of comments, and I determined that there is a strong correlation between banality of post and number of comments. For example, Jordan posts about his FF team = lots of comments. Anselor posts about his fish tank = lots of comments.

Thus, if I want more people to comment, I should talk about less important things. Thus, the topic of today's post: Northern California.

Kim and I have met several people from various parts of California, and they have one linguistic pattern in common, they all refer to the parts of their state as "southern" and "northern." This is also true in the media (do a google search for "northern california" and another for "north california" and see what type of response you get). This is in contrast to Florida, where we refer to things as "North Florida," "South Florida," etc. I have no idea why that is, but Californians are quick to correct you if you slip.
