All Boards Must Die

Dec. 10, 2004

Tonight was board-breaking night at Tae Kwon Do. Since I hadn't been able to attend a breaking night before, I only purchased 2 boards. After I quickly shattered those with my side kicks, I wished I had bought more. Board breaking is surprisingly easy. As long as you focus properly and hit the board in the right spot, a board will break with very little effort.

Holding boards while other people break them is a little harder. You have to keep your arms completely extended and tense so that your arms don't cushion the blow. You have to grip the board only by your fingertips so that the breaker doesn't hit your hands. Finally, you have to remember to look away so you don't get splintered when the board breaks.

Next time, I'm going to try two boards at once with a jumping side kick. It seems like a good goal to shoot for by the end of next semester.
