A little more political

Nov. 5, 2004

Well, the election didn't go as I would have liked. At least Barack Obama is now representing me as senator. To me, the most depressing thing about this election is not that Bush now has a license to pursue his conservative agenda, despite his narrow victory, but rather that the Rovist, neoconservative wing of the Republican party is firmly entrenched. I'm pessimistic that we will ever see the more moderate Republicans gain power any time soon.

I'm trying to look on the bright side of things. Supposing that a Democrat is elected in 2008, Bush's real long-term effects will be whatever Supreme Court justices he is able to appoint. Perhaps we will see some SCOTUS smackdown on the commerce clause. Also, a Republican congress means more research funding, even if it is mostly research into killing people more effectively.

Given the response to my last political post, I was thinking about starting a purely political blog. There are lots of partisan blogs on both sides. However, I don't know of any blogs that appeal especially to moderates such as myself. I'll have to put together a position statement which clarifies what I mean by "moderates such as myself." I think I'll reserve that for another day
